AT AGE 51, BILL BOYER BECOMES THE OLDEST TO WIN AN OVERALL
MOTORCYCLE VICTORY IN BAJA
After weeks of deliberation, speculation, what-ifs, and what-the-
#@%@s, SCORE International handed down some big penalties
that rocked the world of Baja racing. And after the dust settled, the
KRC Construction Class 21 Team led by Bill Boyer came out
unscathed, being one of only a few motorcycle teams with no
penalties.
Bill Boyer, along with teammates Stuart Goggins, Nick Blais, Donnie
DeArman, and Rudy Iribe, ran a perfect race, unofficially placing 4th
in Class 21 on adjusted time. The top finishers of Class 21 came in
within minutes of each other. But, as a result of the time penalties, not only did the KRC Team win their
class but they earned the overall motorcycle victory, beating the second-overall Class 30 team of Mike
Johnson by 4 minutes.
SCORE imposed strict penalties for violations such as course deviations (short-cutting) and speeding
on open highways. “We have always played by the book, and this time we ended up being the fastest
team that rode the entire course without speeding in the controlled sections,” Boyer said. “I gave strict
orders to not speed on the highway.”
Boyer added, “The stars lined up for us this time. I am grateful for the win – it’s been a long road.”
Boyer spent several years racing Baja from 1979 through 1986. In 1982 and 1983, he was a support
rider for Team Honda’s Baja off-road program. As a privateer in Baja he continued to try for a win in
Baja, with no luck. In 1987, he retired from off-road racing in Baja, and stuck to local GP racing with
son Justin and daughter Amanda.
In 2006, Baja competitor and Racers and Ranchers co-founder, Lance Kane, teamed up with Boyer
and DeArman south of the border. Since that time, Boyer has been back, making a push for the
podium in Class 40. In January, team sponsor KRC Construction decided to push for a win in Class 21
with Boyer as the rider of record.
This is the first time in many years that the JCR/Honda team has not won in Baja. Ironically, the new
winner is one of Honda’s own longtime employees. The unassuming Boyer is a technical editor for
American Honda Motor in Torrance, CA. Boyer is apparently the oldest competitor to win an overall
motorcycle victory in the Baja 500.
“I could not have done it without the dedication of my teammates, friends, and my longtime umbrella
girl and wife of 25 years, Diana Boyer,” he said.
Special thanks go out to KRC Construction, Stuart Goggins, Nick Blais, Donnie DeArman, Rudy Iribe,
the Goggins family, and Lance Kane. The team also thanks the companies who provide them with the
equipment needed to win: Cycle Gear, Hall Racing Suspension, Mid-Cities Honda, Pro Honda Oils,
Warp 9, Fasst Co., Blais Racing Services, FMF, IMS, Works Connection, RTT Stabilizers, No Toil, and
Dirt Digits.
