RACE SOLO*
Racing For Something other than bragging rights
Here’s something new and exciting – Gabriel Williams (AKA Mexihonkey, the real 15x) has come up with an idea/ website devoted to solo Baja racers.
www.racesolo.com
Along with creating a prize pool for all solo racers, 20% of the total pool will be donated to a charity of the winning racers choice, hopefully a local Baja organization — an orphanage, shelter, relief supplies…etc.
Lifetime Baja racer Ron “SurfNRide” Wilson will make his first solo attempt this year with a fully supported Precision Concepts-Baja Designs ride backed also by ECC and Applied. Wilson, who’s been on the rosters of top teams for two decades, is looking to at least best Mouse McCoy’s 2003 solo effort as documented in Dust to Glory. The solo action should be heating up and racing for charity sure beats the heck out of doing it for ego or vanity rights. Thus, it’s for seeable that many of the more proven and successful racers in Baja will realize that all the effort it takes to get bragging rights is better spent generating awareness and raising funds for local charities. Watch this unfold in the coming seasons as SCORE gets more requests for an IRON MAN class that is official.
No question that this upcoming BAJA 1000 will be the best action in the history of the race. Stay tuned to DUST for comprehensive coverage and commentary.
* they call it race solo since IRON MAN is now a defunct word in Bja after Anna Jo Cody’s solo finish in 2006.
