Those who have ridden and raced in and around San Felipe know that the area’s sand washed and whooped out terrain is among the most nasty and grueling places to ride or race on the planet. But racers sign up to take on the SCORE course every March in the San Felipe 250.
Again, HONDAs JCR and Co. lead the way with Colton Udall (3x) earning his FIRST ever SCORE Championship as rider of record. Jeff “The OX” Kargola helped Udall and the JCR “B” beat out former champs and contenders Robby Bell and Steve Hengeveld on the BLLUE C WAHOOS MONSTER KAWASAKI (2X). You’ve never seen a more elated Colton Udall in your life. Henge suffered a flat and had to ride it for a while before reaching the next pit.
JCR Honda’s Timmy Weigand (A team) suffered a minor stroke and discovered a serious heart condition requiring surgery just one week before race day. With Weigand out and Quinn Cody on injured reserve, Campbell gave the go ahead for Kendall to run the race solo, something Norman has always wanted to do. At the end of the day he brought a respectful finish to the team after cart wheeling at over 65MPH outside of Morelia Junction.
The morning started off routine with racers leaving the famous arches of San Felipe heading north. Early on, DP Racing’s AJ Stewart (10x) got off the bike early with a broken collarbone around race mile 10. Class 30 Champ Mike Johnson (300x) blew a head gasket early on.
It was a bit of a surprise to see Kendall Norman solo the event when Johnny Campbell could’ve filled in for Weigand. But Norman wanted to go it alone and, according to some accounts, he had the time adjusted lead at one point as he had the 3x bike of Udall in his sights. That was until Norman crashed and spent a half hour in the pits rebuilding the 1x machine.
