Chino, Calif. – August 30, 2010 – Yoshimura rider Ryan Dungey added another No. 1 plate to his already impressive collection on Saturday. The rookie clinched the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship in Southwick, Massachusetts, with 1-1 moto victories, making it his ninth win in a row this season in the outdoor series. Dungey is the only rookie to ever win both the Supercross and Motocross title, and his Yoshimura-powered Suzuki RM-Z450 has gotten him to the front of the pack all season. Stand-in Honda rider Kevin Windham finished fifth overall, while his teammate Andrew Short, who sits second in the standings, soldiered through a tough day to finish 18th overall. In the WMX class, Ashley Fiolek won the first moto en route to a strong second-place finish for the day on her Honda.

Southwick is a very special race on the AMA Pro Motocross circuit, offering one of the sandiest and most challenging tracks of the series. Despite the fact there are two races left in the 2010 season, there was an air of excitement at Southwick as fans anticipated the crowning of a new champion by the end of the day. Ryan Dungey went into the race 111 points ahead in the series, and if he could add enough to his tally at Southwick, he’d be walking out with a No. 1 plate.

The first 450 moto saw Dungey riding a solid race as he positioned himself firmly in second place. When the opportunity arose, Dungey moved past the sandy roost of the leader and into first place on the very last lap. The crowd cheered loudly as Dungey took his 15th moto victory of the season, knowing they were about to witness history with the crowning of a rookie champ. Honda riders Kevin Windham and Andrew Short had mixed results: Windham put in a solid top-10 ride, securing seventh place in the moto, while Short pushed from the last spot on the gate to end the race in 15th.

When the gate dropped for moto two, Dungey used his Yoshimura power to get another good start and move into the lead shortly after the start of the race. He would go uncontested on his way to a perfect 1-1 finish to the day, crossing the finish line more than 24 seconds ahead of everyone else. After taking the checkered flag, Dungey met up with his team to celebrate history in the making. Ryan was given a new jersey to put on featuring the number he’ll run next year, No. 1, and his crew all donned specially made Dungey championship shirts as they crowded onto the podium to celebrate the 20-year-old’s second championship of 2010.

“Congratulations to Ryan Dungey for his awesome, record-breaking rookie season!” Yoshimura R&D of America Senior Vice President Don Sakakura said. “Ryan’s courage, superior skills and diligent conditioning were instrumental in his dominating motocross season, accomplishments which Ryan will surely cherish for a lifetime. His Suzuki RM-Z450 performed flawlessly all season long, we must offer sincere appreciation to the Suzuki engineering team abroad, as well Roger DeCoster and his team of race technicians.”

Sakakura also went on to thank those who made Dungey’s season so successful. “Very special thanks to our valuable team sponsors, Rockstar Energy Drink and Makita Industrial Power tools. Similarly, our technical partners have hugely influenced our successes this season.”

Dungey is the first rookie ever to win both the AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross championships. Dungey has now won four titles in two years, clinching both the 2009 AMA Supercross Western Regional Lites title as well as the 250 Motocross championship. Dungey helped Team USA win the Motocross of Nations last year in Italy, and for 2010 he has been named captain of the team with hopes of keeping the trophy here in the U.S. Joining him on Team USA is Andrew Short, making it two of the three spots on the team filled by Yoshimura racers. The Motocross of Nations takes place on September 25th in Colorado.

For Kevin Windham, moto 2 was a good one. He put together another strong ride, crossing the line in fifth and ending the day in fifth overall. Andrew Short had another rough moto after he went down on the start straightaway and had to work his way up from dead last. Short managed to make his way up to 17th, but by then the moto was over and he had to settle for 18th overall. The Honda rider still holds on to second place in the points standings.

In the WMX series, Honda’s Ashley Fiolek put in another great ride on her Yoshimura-tuned CRF250 on Saturday, winning moto 1 and getting second place in moto 2. Her consistently smooth racing was enough for second overall, which leaves her only 22 points down from first place. Fiolek is the defending WMX champion and she has the drive and skill to make another run at the No. 1 plate in 2010.

The 2010 AMA Motocross Championship visits Steel City Raceway in Delmont, Pennsylvania, for Round 11 on September 4th.

The sixth round of the FIM Enduro World Championship got underway this past weekend from just outside the Greek town of Serres. Points leader, David Knight would finish in the runner-up position on day one after being delayed by a stray dog but would rebound on day two to take the win.

Courtesy: FIM Enduro World Championship

Knight now enjoys a 52-point lead over his closest competitor with only two rounds remaining in the series. Since only 50 points are available per event, there is a very good chance the talented Brit could wrap up the E3-class title early this coming weekend at the GP of Turkey.

Stateside, the third round of the AMA Endurocross series invaded the Pepsi Coliseum in Indianapolis, Ind. Moose Racing had a strong presence at the event with a stellar line-up of riders competing indoors and the Moose Racing semi truck drawing quite the crowd outdoors.

Kevin Rookstool was the top performing Moose Racing rider at the event as he earned his first Endurocross podium finish with a solid third place. The series will head back out west to the Comcast Arena in Everett, Wash. for the fourth round of the series on September 11, 2010.

Also racing in the state of Indiana this past weekend was the Parts Unlimited OMA Nationals. Talented up-and-comer, Jordan Ashburn worked his way onto the podium at the eighth round of the series with a strong third place ride. Ashburn has been turning a lot of heads this year in the off-road community and is quickly becoming someone to look out for on the starting line.

In the Pro ATV class, team riders Kyle Martin and John Pitts put in two good rides to take home a first and a third, respectively. Bryan Hulsey, another Moose Racing rider, still holds onto the championship points lead but his lead is down to only a handful of points as Martin and Pitts are making some late season charges.

The penultimate round of the series takes place on September 18 – 19 in Memphis, Mo. at the Moonshine XC.

AMA Motocross – Southwick, MA

The shifting sands of Southwick were good to the Troy Lee Designs squad. The team’s premier 450-class rider, Ben Townley, matched his season best moto finish with a second. Wil Hahn posted a career best moto finish with a third and overall finish with a fourth. Cole Seely matched his career best moto finish with a ninth and Tarah Gieger continued her podium streak with a third place overall.

Townley’s day started well as he posted the quickest time in qualifying. He hadn’t done that all year and it seemed evident immediately that he would do well in the sand. BT rounded the first turn in second position in the opening moto and was searching for a place to pass Brett Metcalfe for the lead. He tried forcing a move on the second lap, clipped Metty’s rear tire and went down. He would connect with Andrew Short on the next lap and fly off the track again. Ben wasn’t done yet though. After charging all the way back up to eighth position, Townley rolled to a stop on the side of the track. A puncture hole in the engine cases drained the oil and seized the engine. Okay, now he was finished.

The second moto went much better, however, as Ben led for much of the moto. It wasn’t until the halfway point in the race that Ryan Dungey found a way by for the win. Ben would finish second in the moto and seventh overall.

“I felt great out there today,” said Townley. “I knew it would be a good day when I qualified well. It’s too bad I made those mistakes in the first moto because I felt like I should have been up on the podium. All I can do is learn from the mistakes and move forward now. I have two races left and I want to be on the box in both of them.”

The team’s 250 riders both started up front in the first moto. Wil Hahn pulled another holeshot and Seely followed him in sixth position. Hahn led for about half the race and then eventually fell back to third, his best moto finish ever. Seely rode well and finished the moto in ninth.

The second moto started with a Hahn holeshot again! This time Wil could only hold on to fifth by the checkers giving him fourth overall. Seely fell over a couple times and could only muster a seventeenth in the moto for thirteenth overall.

Tarah Gieger was right at home in the sand and was making a run at the win in the first moto. And then she ejected, at speed, and cart wheeled through the sand. She still got up and finished third. She backed that up with another solid third in moto two for another podium finish. She is now, you guessed it, third in the point standings.

The TLD team heads to the great state of Pennsylvania now for the Steel City national. Be sure to come by the team truck if you are going to be there. The entire team will be present signing posters and giving out free hugs to everyone.

BMW Husqvarna Motorsport rider Juha Salminen has made a successful return to racing after injury, claiming a runner-up result in the Enduro 2 class on day two of the GP of Greece. In doing so Juha gave Husqvarna’s new TE449 machine it’s first world championship podium result. Returning to action having been forced to sit out rounds three, four and five of the ’10 EWC series following a foot injury, Salminen wasted no time in getting himself and his new machine up to speed and after placing a strong fourth in class on day one placed as a deserved runner-up on day two.
With temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius during both days of competition at the sixth round of the ’10 Enduro World Championship the Greek event proved to be one of the championship’s toughest to date. But for Salminen the extreme heat and dry conditions were no problem as the former seven-time world champion made light work of the event’s varied and challenging special tests. Just over one-minute behind class winner Ivan Cervantes on day one Juha upped his game on day two to move to the second step of the podium and marked his return to racing in no uncertain terms.
Marko Tarkkala also delivered strong results for the BMW Husqvarna Motorsport team in Greece placing just outside the top 10 on day one and then in sixth on day two. Bad luck prevented Marko from finishing higher up the E2 class results on day one as the Finn damaged his rear brake lever on one of the extreme tests, which hampered his performance and lost him precious time. Bouncing back on day two Marko placed a strong sixth.
The BMW Husqvarna Motorsport team will next be in action in the Enduro World Championship at the GP of Turkey, which takes place on September 4/5.

Juha Salminen – Enduro 2 class: ‘I’m pretty pleased with the way I’ve ridden this weekend. Firstly, it was good to be back racing again after such a long time off. The foot that I injured didn’t give me any problems, but I certainly know I’ve ridden for two long days. The heat wasn’t really a problem for me but the dust was pretty bad in places. I found it really difficult on the first lap on day one as I had to find my rhythm again. Once I was comfortable I could start pushing harder. I made a few small mistakes during the first lap on day two but otherwise everything went well. I had a good result on day two here last year and again this year it’s been a good second day. Hopefully I can continue that in Turkey next weekend.’

Marko Tarkkala – Enduro 2 class: ‘Although my result from day one wasn’t so good generally I didn’t have such a bad day. My one big problem was that I hit my rear brake pedal on something on one of the extreme tests and bent it really badly. I bent it underneath the foot peg and lost quite a lot of time. Apart from that the day went ok. It was very hot but it wasn’t a problem for me. Day two was better. I made some small mistakes but I think all riders did on the enduro test. The important thing was to improve my result, which I did with sixth.’

KTM Enduro Factory rider David Knight, the recently crowned British Champion had a good weekend Rounds 11 and 12 of the E3 World Championship in Serres Greece, finishing on top of the podium on Sunday after coming in a close second on Saturday.
David, who has already re-signed with the KTM Enduro Factory Team and who is working with the company’s R & D department on the development of the new Enduro model had to concede to Christophe Nambotin on Saturday by the smallest of margin of 5.11 seconds

Knight got his revenge on Sunday as riders a second day on the Enduro circuit in high summer temperatures and put in a fast ride for first place. His teammate Simone Albergoni was not so lucky. The Italian crashed on Saturday and crushed his finger, which was bruised, swollen and very painful, hampering his efforts on both days. He still managed creditable 8-6 result. KTM rider Markus Kehr of Germany is also gaining in form and rode to a 7-4 result in Serres.

David Knight has an impressive 53-point lead over second placed Nambotin and is well placed to take the title. His only possible challengers are either Nambotin or his own teammate Albergoni who are currently separated by a single point.

TORC Series Rounds 9 and 10 – Route 66 Raceway, Chicagoland, IL

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 28, 2010) – In a big change of race pace, moving racing from familiar weekend stops to mid-week race nights, rounds 9 and 10 of the Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL, debuted this Wednesday and Thursday at Route 66 Raceway in Chicagoland, IL.

Coming directly from his Motorsports Hall of Fame of American induction activities in Detroit, seven-time AMA Supercross Champion Jeremy McGrath arrived at the Route 66 Raceway just hours before race start and accepted the final of his Hall of Fame honors via live remote just before the start of the evening’s racing!

Later, in the PRO 2WD class, McGrath battled hard but mechanical difficulties ultimately left him and his Monster Energy/MasterCraft/Toyota/BFG truck with a fifth place finish. Thursday evening, McGrath started out on the pole but mechanical issues once again plagued the Monster Energy/MasterCraft/Toyota/BFG truck causing McGrath to loose ground he was unable to make up forcing another fifth place finish. McGrath continues to remain third in the overall championship points race with 179 points. (Note: Last week’s race recap incorrectly reported McGrath had moved into second place in the championships points race.)

A disappointed McGrath had this to say, “Well the week started out great with a once in a lifetime deal I went to at the Motorsports Hall of Fame in Detroit and then luck was just not on my side for these two rounds of racing that’s for sure. Gotta get some things worked out on the truck for Crandon and would really like to put my Monster Energy/MasterCraft/Toyota/BFG truck back on the podium again.”

Indianapolis, IN (August 27, 2010) – Round three of the GEICO AMA EnduroCross series presented by E3 Sparkplugs made its inaugural visit to Indianapolis Indiana on Friday night to kick off the MotoGP weekend. The vocal contingent of European fans got to witness one of their own take the win as Taddy Blazusiak showed off his amazing talent. The Polish KTM rider battled early with Mike Brown and had pressure from Geoff Aaron but proved to be the only rider to avoid serious mistakes and slowly left the other riders behind. The battle for the final podium spots was amazing as no fewer than six riders battled hard for the positions. In the end, GEICO backed Kyle Redmond took second for his first ever EnduroCross podium. The California rider has been the top American at Extreme Enduro events such as Erzeberg and Romaniacs multiple times and finally made his skills pay off on the intense EnduroCross course. He was joined by another first time podium finisher as RPM KTM backed Kevin Rookstool, a journeyman motocross racer that has made all three main events this season stole the position from some established stars.

Cody Webb, the recently crowned 2010 National Trials champion got the day started by setting the fastest time during the Pioneer Hot Lap that determines the gate picks for the evenings heat races. The Gas Gas rider also earned a $500 bonus from Rekluse clutch by being the fastest rider using their auto clutch. Taddy Blazusiak and Geoff Aaron were the second and third fastest qualifiers.

Brown, Blazusiak and Aaron were the heat race winners and Brown used his first gate pick to take the $750 Girardi Wealth Management holeshot award. Brown struggled through the wood pile on the first lap and dropped back to third, which he held until he yard saled in the same section and ultimately finished 9th. Geoff Aaron, the second place finisher at the last two events held second and then third position for most of the race but bent his shifter and finished 11th. Redmond steadily rode his Kawasaki to second position and held it despite several riders breathing down his neck all the way to the checkered flag. Rookstool had to go through the LCQ to make the main event and then rode a solid race to hold off Gary Sutherlin and Justin Soule. Lucas Oil backed Colton Haaker had a legitimate shot at the podium but threw it away in the same log pile that took Brown down and he finished sixth ahead of Cory Graffunder and Jamie Lanza. Brown, Webb and Aaron rounded out 9th to 11th positions.

In the support classes, Steve Leivan won the Vet class over Off Road legend Jeff Fredette and Rik Smits, the former Indiana Pacers basketball player that now loves riding dirt bikes. Michael Williams won the open Amateur main event and Patrick Smage won the TrialsCross class. The top four in the Amateur classes battled for $500 in the dash for cash and Smage came back again to take the cash for gas money back to Wisconsin.
